What’s the idea with divesting?

Any time we buy something, we support the businesses around it; and when we have a bank account or make an investment, our money is on loan to the institution we pick or companies we’ve invested in. Why not loan to banks that have positive impact in communities, rather than ones which invest in global decimation?

WHAT’s THE HISTORY?

There’s a longer backstory, but recent divestment movements come from three distinct activist projects:

  1. Ecological defense (oil), led by the good folks at 350.org. They’ve already supported 5.4 TRILLION dollars moving out of investments that support petroluem.
  2. Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement to support better treatment of the people of Palestine by withdrawing economic support from Israel.
  3. Ecological defense (pipeline), led by activists aiming to stop the Dakota Access pipeline from wrecking the Sioux lands near the Mississippi by removing money from banks funding the project.

BUT IT SEEMS COMPLICATED!

Yeah, and I’m sure that has nothing to do with the millions of dollars in ad spend your bank puts out to ensure that it seems normalized in your life…
